DIY Teeth Whitening Methods
The following is an article by J. Leger on Do-It-Yourself methods used to whiten teeth.
Let talk about causes of teeth stains and some DIY teeth whitening methods that you may want to try.
Many factors contribute to the discoloration of your teeth. The most common of these factors are cigarette smoke, caffeinated beverages, red wine and prescription drugs. If you want to help the appearance of your smile and whiten your teeth, there are several options you can take. One, of course, is for you to see your dentist for an in-office teeth whitening. This, however, can be costly and many people prefer to go the DIY route instead.
Frequent brushing and flossing are effective ways of reducing and preventing teeth discoloration and preserve the general health of your mouth, teeth and gums. Flossing also helps remove plaque and hard-to-reach food particles that cause tooth decay as well as discoloration. Some people claim that adding a little salt to your regular toothpaste will aid in whitening.
One old method of “home” whitening has been the use of lemon juice to help bleach teeth. But this can actually do your pearly whites more harm than good if this is not done with care. To much exposure to the acid in citrus fruits can destroy the natural coatings that teeth have and lead to sensitivity and decay.
Baking soda can be a very effective DIY teeth whitening agent. But, again, over use can do damage because baking soda is abrasive and has the potential to strip away your teeth’s enamel. Be sure not to use it more than twice a day and rinse your mouth good after brushing with baking soda. This seems to be a common mixture to brush with: one teaspoon of baking soda, a couple of drops of white vinegar, and a pinch of salt.
Apple cider vinegar is also an effective whitener when diluted with water. It can not only whiten your teeth but also a great mouthwash and leaves a fresh feeling in your mouth.
Another important thing we can all do for DIY teeth whitening is to modify some of our personal habits. The very worst of the staining agents is nicotine. Kicking this habit can do great things for you in several ways and it certainly effects the health of your mouth, gums and teeth. Coffee stains are very bad as well. If you can’t cut down on your coffee intake you should try brushing after your morning coffee as much as possible. This can be good advice for red wine, dark grapes, dark soft drinks or any other food that can stain your teeth.
The use of “home” whitening methods is interesting but not for everyone. The simple use of swabs to whiten your teeth can be explored further if you:
